BACAR Discussion Groups: Advocacy for Migrants & Homeless

Sisters, Associates, and friends of several Monterey and San Francisco Bay Area congregations gathered at the Sisters of Notre Dame Province Center in Belmont, CA on Saturday May 18, 2019 to listen, share, learn, and discuss about the Immigration Crisis. Some participated by Zoom. The morning began with prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe - Mother of the Americas, followed by an opportunity for each one present to state why they were there this day. The ice breaker was heartening and led to a open dialogue within groups of strong emotions about what is happening today with asylum seekers. This was followed by a detailed and 'eye opening' presentation by Sister Mary Becker, SNJM, and Sister Susan Olson, SNDdeN who have both volunteered hours and days at ‘The Wall’ with immigrants in Texas and California. Both Mary and Susan expanded on the background of immigration as well as the stories they have personally encountered with asylum seekers - truly heart wrenching! We had an opportunity to continue to share ideas and thoughts for next steps in supporting the sisters who have responded to this call from the leadership of LCWR (Leadership Conference of Women Religious). Plans were made to network with one another in sending supplies and other needs to the border. The donations of clothing, backpacks, blankets, and money were collected and will be carried by Mary to the next point she will be volunteering at in California. This is an ongoing disaster to humanity and the end is not in sight! -submitted by Kathy Noether, CA SNDdeN Associate and Co director of BACAR
